Fire Fighters - How being prepared reduces response time

Written by Leonard D'Orlando,

All first responders  know that when they get the call a quick response time is critical. It contributes to saving lives, containing fires, and ensuring the safety of the community. Fire fighters use various resources at their disposal to accomplish what is needed while ensuring their safety and the safety of those around them.

Safety goes beyond lights and sirens. The proper function of these two key devices are important when letting the public know an emergency vehicle is in route to a call. There is, however, other essential equipment that plays just as important a role in ensuring a quick and safe response time. For the driver there should always be good visibility of their surroundings, clear communication with their crews/dispatch, and navigation equipment vital to cutting down on response times.

For the fire fighter crews turn out gear at the ready and ease of movement in and around the vehicle is important. Once on scene it is essential for the first responders to have vehicles and apparatus that are stocked with proper tools for any situation. Some of these include radios, lights, hand and power tools, ropes, axes, and pike poles just to name a few. Fire fighters should also be able to reach their equipment, tools, hoses, and operate pumps and ladders with ease as well.

Winter presents its own challenges. As we get ready for another winter season in the States first responders and their equipment are further put to the test and safety is challenged. These individuals must continue to operate efficiently while being careful on slippery conditions and being sure that their equipment and supplies do not run the risk of freezing or breaking.

Vehicles need to be properly prepped for the colder weather as well, so they also do not run the risk of breaking down. All fluids and equipment need to be checked for proper operation at colder temperatures. Proper winter tires and traction devices also go a long way in cutting down on response times and getting the first responders to their destination safely.

One such traction device that is of great benefit to first responders is the Onspot automatic tire chain system. At the flip of a dashboard switch from inside the cab the driver is instantly provided with traction on snow and ice from the chain wheels that place strands of chain between the tires and road surface. This easy-to-use system helps provide essential traction, cut down on response times, and ensure safe travel. Follow the link to learn more about this system.
