Freight Logistics Today - New Challenges For The Fleet Manager

Written by Leonard D'Orlando,

The world of the fleet manager is more complex than ever. Whether you are an owner operator working solo with one truck and trailer or in charge of a large fleet with hundreds of drivers and equipment. The landscape of the logistics world today has changed drastically even in just the past few years.

The competition is vast and fierce. Simply look around at all the logistics companies of today traveling the highways and you will find no shortage of options. From short to long hauls, and general to specialized or even expedited freight the options for customers to choose from are endless.

How to stand out from the logistics herd. To keep your company from getting lost and stand out from the rest takes more than being a low cost alternative. There is always another company that may come in lower. No doubt saving customers money is a part of a fleet manager’s success. However, a fleet with a dedicated driver(s) who have today’s technology and can use it, along with a proven track record of on time deliveries are just as important to adding value for the customer.

The ability to overcome challenges.  This is another important trait of a solid logistics company. The fleet manager is always faced with challenges, some minor and some major. Take for example the situation of inclement weather such as driving through wintry conditions on snow and ice. The fleet manager may certainly run the risk of driver safety and the potential from a delayed or missed delivery.

It’s the little things that add value and build relationships between logistics companies and their customers. The Onspot system is just one of those “little things” that separate certain logistics companies from the rest. The system provides drivers with traction on snow and ice at the flip of a dash-board switch. This ensures the safety of the driver, allows them to remain focused on the job at hand and offer on time delivery again adding value for their customer.
