The road network in Norway is quite complex. Narrow roads, tunnels, steep hills. That is also why it is so beautiful to drive in Norway. You get fabulous views of the grand nature.
There are several regulations in place to make sure that transports with heavy vehicles works as good as possible. That is to ensure the safety of the drivers and other persons in the traffic enviroment. To avoid accidents with personal injuries and damage of roads and equipment.
Since we work with automatic snow chains we often get questions on what the Norwegian regulations say. If you have a heavy motor vehicle you must use at least three chains. One that fits the front wheels and two that fits the driven wheels. If you have a tractor-trailer combination, with twin wheels on the driving axle you must bring seven set of chains. One for the steering axle, four for the driven wheels and two that fits the trailer.
If you have an automatic snow chain system mounted on your vehicle, this replaces two chains on the driven axle with twin wheels.
Statens vegvesen ( Norwegian Public Roads Administration ) are setting the regulations regarding this and other traffic related issues. They have compiled a Trucker´s Guide to driving in Norway. It holds all that you need to know when driving in the country.
In it you can read about topics like: "Driving in winter", "Driving on slippery roads", "How to attach universal tyre chains" and also "Rules for driving in tunnels for commercial drivers". You will aslo find current and updated information on the traffic situation on their homepage
The Truckers Guide is available in several languages and is free to download from the homepage of Statens vegvesen. Click below on the button for a link directly to it:
